The dictionary definition of a veneer is ‘’A plastic or porcelain coating bonded to the surface of a cosmetically imperfect tooth’’.  The word ‘veneer’ comes from the French word ‘fournir’ meaning to furnish. Just as you would ‘furnish’ your home, you can furnish the appearance of your teeth with veneers and achieve that perfect, straight, white smile.

The biggest celebrity craze aesthetically, veneers have become very popular in the past decade, with more and more everyday people wanting to achieve their own Hollywood smile. The market is full of options and budgets, but be very careful who you go to for your veneers – a cheaper treatment in Turkey may not always end in the best results. We have all come across the very obvious unfortunate outcome by now, but it’s no joke to those who have had an unfortunate outcome. Always go to your dentist first to discuss your options.

The treatment is indeed a little more than a porcelain coating placed over your tooth. Veneers are custom-made from porcelain, which is bonded to the front surface of the tooth. One of the top cosmetic treatments, veneers are the quick and effective solutions to chipped, misshapen, crooked and even stained teeth.

Veneers are an expensive solution when fixing teeth imperfections. There are a few options on what type of veneer you can use which can help bring the cost down. It all depends on your individual needs. You’ll need to choose between porcelain and composite veneers, and the decision will not only depend on your budget but also the look you want to achieve, and how long you want the treatment to last.

More complex projects, such as correcting tooth alignment or covering a chipped tooth, will require more planning and testing to ensure the solution is exactly as desired. The dentist will often create a dental mask in order to test different shapes and find a solution that the patient is happy with.

Porcelain veneers are the most natural looking and durable method, which are created by a skilled lab technician which takes time and adds to the cost of the materials, on top of the dental appointments. This option is often used for more complex projects such as correcting tooth alignment and covering deeply chipped teeth. The dentist will often create a dental mask in order to test different shapes to create the best solution you will be happy with.  As these problems require more planning and testing it again adds to the cost.

Composite veneers are more economical, at usually a third of the price of the porcelain option. These require no lab work as the dentist builds up the shape gradually as he applies the material. Composite veneers are good for fixing the appearance of small chips, stains and the sizing of the tooth. This option is good for a quick fix that will last approximately 5 to 10 years; half of the time porcelain veneers will last.

The benefits of veneers are they are made strong and durable and will last 15 to 20 years.  You’re not restricted to what you can and cannot eat and drink. Veneers are quicker and less expensive than a dental implant. Your dentist will go through your individual needs and often have a different approach for the various issues you might need resolving.

Veneers are made to measure and can be used from one to even a full set of front teeth. The porcelain is stain-resistant and the translucency of the material means they closely resemble natural teeth. Be aware that applying veneers requires the removal of enamel from healthy teeth. Removing the enamel is essential in preparing enough space for the veneer to be attached. These teeth can’t be left uncovered again, so you are commiting to a lifetime of veneers or some other tooth covering such as crowns.

If you’re still unsure about veneers, you may still be able to achieve your perfect smile by significantly improving the aesthetics of your teeth with less invasive treatment, such as braces, whitening and tooth filing.
