Does a twinge of pain justify a serious oral concern?

Most of us are not grateful for small twinges of pain. However, if you look at them in another light, then pain is nature’s way of protecting you. When you feel a twinge of pain, it’s your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong. This is demonstrated clearly in the case of tooth pain.

More often than not, there is more to that dull ache or twinge in your mouth. You’ll find that the pain in your mouth is a clue of the current status of your oral health. The severity of the pain will reveal the need for a consultation or potential remedies with your dentist. In the long run, it pays to know what that stinging sensation is telling you about your oral health.

Discomfort while eating hot or cold food

Having a small wince of pain while eating an ice lolly is not a problem: it just indicates that your teeth are sensitive. A lot of us will experience heightened levels of teeth sensitivity after procedures such as teeth whitening or as a result of over-brushing. However, if the pain doesn’t go away after an extended amount of time, don’t ignore it.

Tooth sensitivity is an indicator of tooth decay, which is a condition caused by harmful bacteria in your mouth. If you experience sudden and forceful sensitivity, consult your dentist to restore your tooth as soon as possible.

Sharp pains when you bite

If you experience a sharp pain when you take bites, seek help immediately.

Strong pain when biting indicates serious oral problems, including cracked teeth or eroded or loose fillings. The pain shows that your tooth’s pulp tissue (which contains nerves and vessels) might be exposed. Having a root canal treatment will remove this infected tissue, saving your tooth and you from further pain.

A dull ache in your jaw and top teeth

Having a dull ache in the upper region of your mouth or in your jaw may signal sinus or tooth pain. The common cold will often trigger these symptoms, but if the aching doesn’t stop, seek medical help.

Always pay attention to what your body is trying to tell you through these little aches and pains. Once you experience symptoms, get in touch with your local dentist as soon as possible.
