Composite Bonding Treatment

What does composite bonding treatment involve?

Its purpose

Composite bonding is used to fill minor gaps or damage to the teeth, such as chips or cracks.  It is also helpful in cases of discoloured teeth, so that the teeth are restored to their natural colour.

Bonding is often used alongside teeth whitening.  The whitening is carried out first, then the composite bonding.  This is because the colour of the composite bonding cannot be changed once it is placed, so it can be matched to the newly whitened teeth.

Benefits

The procedure is not invasive.  Some treatments (such as veneers and crowns) necessitate the removal of part of the tooth, but in the case of bonding, the surface of the tooth is merely roughened to help the adhesive do its work.

The treatment can be carried out in one visit and the patient can bite down straight away.

The price per tooth in the UK is around £200 – £400.

The Process

The colour of the bonding is chosen
The tooth’s surface is slightly roughened

The surface is then coated to further assist adhesion

Resin is applied

It is then moulded to the desired shape and size of the tooth

The resin is hardened using a curing light

The tooth is then shaped and polished

Caution

Any gum disease must be cured before bonding can be used.  Bonding can be used if the patient has previously had gum disease which was cured.

After Care

For 48 hours, there must be no smoking, tea, coffee or foods which are known to stain the teeth, such as curry.

Brushing must continue, and oral hygiene visits made regularly.

No nail biting or pen chewing.  Note that the bonding is not as strong as your natural teeth, so you shouldn’t treat it as though it was.

Talk to your dentist or contact The Mall Dental to discuss the treatment and what you hope it will achieve for your oral health and wellbeing.
