The Prospect of Having Dentures

Most adults are missing at least one tooth, with 6 out of 100, missing all of their own teeth. But this statistic is well hidden as it’s not easy to tell if someone is wearing false teeth because of their natural appearance.

What is more, as dentures are made specifically for the wearer’s mouth, they feel comfortable. If you are considering dentures, or if you already have them, it is important that you look after them to get the most from your dentures and to ensure that they look good. Here we share some top tips to help you to keep your dentures looking and feeling great.

Keep your dentures clean

Just like your natural teeth, keeping dentures clean is important to preventing staining, reducing halitosis (bad breath) and limiting the risk of developing gum disease. To keep the dentures clean, brush them daily with a non-abrasive cleaner, and soak them in water with a disinfecting cleaning tablet at night, or when not wearing them. This will not only keep them clean, but it will also help to stop dentures from drying out and losing their shape. If unsure about how to keep your dentures clean, ask the friendly staff at The Mall Stockport, who will be happy to show you how to look after your dentures properly. It is especially important to seek advice if you have soft-lined dentures, as they may require special cleaning attention. If you have any natural teeth remaining, make sure to also brush them twice per day with a toothpaste recommended by your dentist.

It might sound strange, but in addition to daily brushing and soaking, microwaving dentures can help to prevent the build-up of bacteria. If your dentures do not contain any metal parts, and if your dentist agrees to the suitability of the technique, you can microwave your dentures at 650 watts for 3 minutes once a week.

Avoid chemicals

To keep your dentures stain-free and strong, it is best to avoid chemical cleaners. Instead, you can use baking soda, which is a natural abrasive. Baking soda is included in some toothpastes and can be used daily on dentures, too. Simply mix two teaspoons of baking soda with warm water to create a paste and then, using a soft-bristled toothbrush, scrub the paste over the dentures and rinse them well with water.

Another great option for keeping dentures clean is white vinegar. Because of the high acid content, white vinegar acts as a disinfectant, which means that it can remove plaque. You can mix one part vinegar with nine parts water to soak dentures overnight, or if soaking for just 10-30 minutes, mix one part vinegar with one part water. After soaking your dentures, brush and rinse them well.
