Floss the dentists’ way

Flossing may not sound all that glamorous, but for your oral health it is essential. By brushing and flossing your teeth regularly, you will be helping to prevent tooth damage and decay.

When flossing becomes a habit, you will be supporting your good dental health and reduce the need for dental treatment. Flossing works well with brushing because it allows you to reach the spaces between your teeth, removing debris that would otherwise cause decay. To help you get the most from flossing, here are some tips:

  1. Use waxed floss

Waxed floss is recommended by dentists because it is better able to slide between the teeth. Begin with 15-18 inches of floss, keep the floss taut with 2-4 inches exposed, and then wrap the extra floss around your middle fingers. To floss, slide the floss up and down between each tooth in a rubbing motion, working the floss into the spaces between the gum line and the tooth. Make sure that you reach all your teeth, including the back molars.

  1. Floss regularly

In an ideal world, you should floss after every meal or snack. To help you do this, keep single-use, disposable floss in your bag. This will be especially helpful after going out for snacks and meals. However, if flossing so frequently feels overwhelming, strive to floss at least once a day. If you can only floss once, do it before bedtime. Flossing at night will ensure that you remove debris between the teeth to help to reduce the rate of bacteria that builds up during the night.

  1. Seek dental advice if unsure

If you feel pain or experience bleeding gums when you floss, make sure you consult your dentist. Your dentist will be able to advise you as to how best to floss, and will also check for gum disease, which can cause bleeding.
