Other Than Mint: Food For A Fresher Breath

There is nothing worse than realising your breath smells like garlic and seeing the person you are talking to wrinkle his nose. Having a dragon breath is one of the easiest ways to taint your reputation.

The mouth is technically a world of bacteria and other microorganisms, most of which produce acids that damage the teeth and cause the mouth to smell bad. While proper oral hygiene is essential to prevent this dilemma, you need to be careful when it comes to choosing the food you eat.

Other than cutting down on culprits, such as sugar, garlic and onion, you need to eat (or drink) more of the following:

Yogurt

It may seem unlikely, but a healthy dose of this dairy product will help you keep a fresh breath. The cultured bacteria in yogurt can kerb the production of hydrogen sulphide in the mouth, which causes bad breath. Yogurt also stabilises the pH level of the mouth by reducing the amount of acid.

Apples and Similar Crunchy Fruits

Apples have components that reduce the level of sulphur in the mouth. And since they’re crunchy, they can stimulate the production of saliva. A moist mouth helps in controlling the odour-causing bacteria. Other fruits include kiwis, strawberries and citruses.

Herbs

Herbs are not only for cooking. They can also make your breath fresh, as they contain anti-oxidants and anti-bacterial compounds. Other than chewing on them, you can make a tea out of them. Keep in your stash the following: parsley, spearmint, peppermint, eucalyptus and cinnamon.

Water

Keeping yourself hydrated does not only aid in digestion. It also flushes away body waste and bacteria that cause bad breath. It keeps your mouth moist and stimulates saliva production, which in turn helps control the thriving of bacteria.

These are only some of the foods that promote fresh breath. If the problem is persistent, you can always consult a trusted dentist at The Mall Stockport. Contact us today or visit our Treatments page to learn more about our services.
