Top tips to maintain your smile.

We know how important it is to keep your teeth white after treatment, so we’ve compiled our key top tips to keep your teeth shining bright. These actions are those you can take in addition to our recommended touch up treatments at the surgery, to increase the longevity of your whiter teeth.

Brushing well, of course!

A general rule of thumb is 2-2: brushing twice a day: once after breakfast or when you wake up, and once again before you go to sleep, for two minutes each time. It’s key that a minimum of two minutes is spent, giving you time to cover the surface of all of your teeth thoroughly. This being said, your method of brushing is just as important. When brushing, see it rather as a massage: rotating in small circles on each tooth with pressure but not brute force. Furthermore, we do recommend an electric toothbrush, which affords increased effectiveness in removing bacteria above manual brushing.

Replace your toothbrush regularly.

Brushes and brush heads should be replaced every 3-4 months. They are not as effective once the bristles have spread and are no longer in a tight cluster.

Regulate your diet.

As mentioned in previous blog posts, food and drinks have a huge impact on your oral health and specifically teeth staining. We recommend cutting down on high acidity foods and drink eg. coffee and fruit juice, and upping your water intake to dilute the acid and bacteria that cause wear, staining, and plaque build-up leading to decay. Green tea is a recommended alternative as a caffeinated drink as studies have shown its effectiveness in aiding enamel strength. Milk and dairy products should be considered as they contain a strong source of calcium, linked to the density of your teeth and colouring.

Regular dental check-ups

Of course, visiting your dentist every six months is recommended, to ensure healthy teeth and help keep on track of your general oral health. Dentists or dental hygienists can also provide cleaning and remove any abnormalities that are affecting your bright white smile!

We offer an extensive range of treatments but we feel it’s important you’re clued up on the little things you can do to maintain your pearly whites. Check out The Malls’ many other posts, covering everything from teeth whitening to veneers, braces and implants.
