A Guide to Dental Implants for Tooth Replacement

Thanks to dental implants, there is now a permanent way for your dentist to replace your missing teeth. At The Mall Stockport we believe that tooth replacement is very important, because to do otherwise could have serious implications for your dental and general health. In many cases, we’ve found that implants are the best way to replace missing teeth.

If you lose a tooth and don’t replace it, you risk your remaining teeth becoming crooked or twisted as they move into the gap left behind. This increases your risk of dental decay as the teeth become more difficult to clean, and can even result in further tooth loss.

When several or all the teeth are missing from one or both jaws, your diet is likely to be restricted to soft foods or liquids, making it harder to obtain good nutrition. Your speech may also be affected, not to mention your self-confidence.

In all of these scenarios, dental implants can help. At The Mall Stockport practice we can replace one missing tooth with a single implant and a crown, whilst in the case of multiple or all missing teeth, a series of implants and an implant-retained bridge is often the best option.

It is also possible to stabilise dentures using dental implants. Common denture woes, including issues with eating and speaking as false teeth become gradually looser and uncomfortable over time, along with damage to your confidence if you fear your denture could fall out, arise when the jaw bone shrinks and/or the gum tissue recedes.

Because dentures only replace the crowns of the teeth, they do nothing to stop the jaw bone shrinking – a frequently occurring side-effect of multiple missing teeth. Dental implants help to stop this because they actively promote bone growth.

We use the latest digital 3D software at The Mall Stockport dental practice to plan and design your dental implants. Sometimes temporary teeth will be attached right away, while in other cases a healing period of a few months is needed.

At The Mall Stockport, most patients only require local anaesthetic for the placement of dental implants. However, conscious sedation is available for nervous patients.
