Dental Implants: Getting to The Root of The Problem

When you lose a tooth, you lose other things too; your confidence, your ability to eat certain foods easily, and potentially more of your teeth. Although you may be inclined to associate tooth loss with old age this is not always true, poor oral health or accidents can affect anyone. The question is, when you have lost a tooth or teeth, what do you do about it? Here at The Mall Stockport, dental implants are providing adults of all ages with an effective and reliable alternative to bridges or dentures.

A better bridge

Your teeth are subject to a lot of wear and tear over a lifetime, and you may already have a  bridge or dentures to restore the appearance of your teeth. Although the techniques and materials used to make replacement teeth mean that they look very natural, they lack one essential thing – a root. As a bridge or dentures are fitted over the gums, they are never as firmly fixed as your natural teeth, and this is where problems can begin. A traditional bridge is fixed by crowns onto the teeth on either side of the gap. To fit the crowns, your dentist has to grind down 2 of your remaining teeth. This means that in addition to the original teeth that have been lost, 2 more have also been damaged as part of the restoration. At our practice at The Mall Stockport, dental implants can be used to support your bridge without the need to fit crowns on your remaining teeth.

Receding gums and sliding dentures

If you are already wearing full or partial dentures, you will probably have become aware that over time, they no longer fit your mouth as well as they did when they were first fitted. This is not your imagination; there is a natural reason for this and wearing dentures will not prevent it. When your teeth are removed, the bone that surrounded them is no longer supported and is reabsorbed, resulting in loss of depth and looser dentures. Here at The Mall Stockport, dental implants can be used to fix your dentures securely in place, and help to prevent your gums from receding.
