Braces can often be viewed as embarrassing or unappealing owing to cosmetic issues and self-consciousness. Until the end of your treatment, you need to be patient and wait out the results with your braces, though it’s easy to feel impatient and eager to gain your perfect smile instantly. In order to add a little bit of excitement to your braces journey, chat to your orthodontist about different colours and how you can make your teeth seem whiter during your treatment.
What do Colour Braces do?
Usually the term ‘colour braces’ is actually a reference to the bands on the braces, and the colour of those. The bands are those small rubber elastics that go around the brackets (the parts secured to your teeth) of your braces, and their job is to hold the wire in place over your teeth. Many people assume that the purpose of these bands is simply for aesthetic or cosmetic purposes, when in actual fact they are a large part of maintaining the upkeep of your smile and its movement. It also doesn’t hurt that it can add a bit of fun to the experience by changing the colour of your bands at each appointment…
How can bands make your teeth look whiter?
Having braces can make you feel self-conscious anyway, so choosing the right colour to make your teeth seem whiter is worth researching. The best choice is often to opt for a darker colour; if you opt for white bands or lighter colours, they will make your teeth seem less white in comparison. Darker colours, for example deep blues or purples, will create a contrast against your tooth colour and can make them seem whiter. It’s not too dissimilar to the effects of wearing a red lipstick to make your teeth look whiter or wearing certain colours to make you appear more tanned. It’s important not to go too dark though, as these bands can end up having the opposite effect.
What do black bands for braces do?
It might seem like the perfect choice to go for black bands; being the contrasting colour to white would naturally make it seem like the right way to make teeth seem whiter. However, black bands can often make teeth look more discoloured than they really are. The black colour of the bands can make it look like there is food stuck in your teeth, or sometimes can create a replica of decay. This effect will also gradually become worse as the bands fade and age over time, so it’s best to stay away from black bands in general.
So, in order to keep your teeth looking white and avoid any possibilities of them looking dirty, you should opt for a darker colour band without going for totally black bands.
